The Advanced Heat Treat Corp. facility located in Cullman, AL has recently helped numerous customers combat their galling issues. Galling is especially troublesome in the oil and gas industry, however other industries can experience the same issue. In the oil and gas industry, two pieces of pipe are generally screwed together for downhole drilling. The heat and pressure ends up merging the two together as one piece - they basically weld themselves together.
According to Drew Hutchison, Director of Sales and Operations at Cullman, "Parts gall up so bad the customer has to drill them out, which slows them down. Once they are galled they need to be re-threaded or scrapped. They've contacted us to see where we can help."
Instead of using a typical ion / plasma or gas nitriding process, which could make the threads brittle, Hutchison has worked with the engineers and suggested using AHT's "S" phase nitriding to process the parts. This has proven to create anti-galling properties with these steels - especially when using 316 stainless. Customers have also had success with low carbon steels such as A36. The nitride process is done on the threads, while the bore is masked off.
